Cell Phone Photography Corps
Grupo de jóvenes artistas que documentan y comparten sus experiencias personales en torno al COVID-19 a través de imágenes capturadas desde sus celulares.
Alma Lopez, Mentor
Alma currently serves as the Director of Brown Issues, a statewide youth-centered leadership organization that cultivates the next generation of Brown Leaders. In this capacity, Alma supports systems change organizing and leads collaborative work with healthcare and education advocates. She also manages the organization’s year-round Sacramento County high school organizing programming on education, healing, civic engagement, and narrative change.
Previously, Alma held positions as community organizer, education and health policy analyst, and continues to work directly with youth and their families around immigration, K-12 education, and higher education; topics dear to Alma’s heart.
As a first-generation college student, Alma received her Bachelors of Science in Biology and a minor in Chicano Studies from California State University, Sacramento. She was born and raised in Zamora, Michoacán, México, and spends time with her family or playing soccer in her free time.
Andres Alvarez, Mentor
Andres Alvarez is a photographer and aspiring painter who lives in Sacramento, CA. He has exhibited his photographs and paintings at several locations including Axis Gallery, Sol Collective, the Crocker Art Museum, and the Latino Center of Art and Culture. His photography has been published by the California Arts Council, Sacramento News and Review, Sacramento Magazine, and several online media outlets.
His photography subject matter is wide ranging from abstract color theory principles to social justice issues like Black Lives Matter. In addition to a traditional DSLR camera, Andres has used the camera phone for his photography for almost ten years. He has an extensive catalogue of work featured on his social media page on Instagram, @andresideas. This social media account serves as a journal highlighting his current body of work and thoughts on the process of photographing and/or the image(s) shared.
Ashley Abrego Yotz
My name is Ashley Abrego Yotz. My time with Brown Issues officially began during my Junior year of High School (2017) where I formed part of the “Resistencia United Artist Collective” and helped create a 12’ x 24’ mobile mural about the Brown young women in South Sacramento. I am currently in my second year of college at Sacramento State. I am currently looking into possibly becoming a school counselor for High School students. I enjoy creating amazing memories with my friends and family. I also enjoy taking a short drive while vibing to my favorite music/artists, it gives me a sense of peace and comfort.
Stephanie Lopez
My Name is Stephanie Lopez. I have been involved with Brown Issues since my sophomore year of high school. I am currently not enrolled in school but when I do enroll I will be pursuing my degree in political science. Brown Issues is actually the reason why I got interested in politics and why I chose to pursue the degree of political science. On my free time I spend it hanging out with my niece and nephew or surrounding myself with nature which I really love.
Diana Soto
My name is Diana Soto. I was introduced to Brown Issues my freshman year of high school but didn’t get involved until my sophomore year. I am currently in my second year of college at Sacramento State. I plan to receive my bachelors in Sociology. I enjoy fall, spending time with my family & friends, and my cats.
